Description: Princeton in Latin America (PiLA) is a non-profit organization that partners with non-profits throughout Latin America to match them with young, public sector professionals seeking full-year fellowships in development work. We are an independent 501(c)3 which is not funded by Princeton University. PiLA placements offer important field experience to recent college alumni who cannot otherwise find NGO work i Latin America and who are eager to pursue careers in development work. PiLA opens the doors to career paths, personal enrichment, and understanding service as an effective way to address social needs. The program seeks to add new members to a rising generation of internationally engaged civic leaders. These fellowships enable students to extend the benefits of their education beyond the classroom and join a group of motivated citizens with a lifelong commitment to Latin America. The work of these graduates supports efforts to overcome the region’s educational, economic, and environmental barriers to development. Costs: We expect all three stakeholders in the process (the fellow, the partner organization, and PiLA) to have a stake in the cost of the fellowship. Therefore, fellows are responsible for their airfare and health insurance. For each country, a monthly stipend is determined to cover housing, food, and local transportation, which is paid to the fellow through contributions from the partner organization and PiLA. PiLA fellowships are not money-making ventures, and fellows should expect to live modestly within the local culture. In addition to the application fee, selected fellows are responsible for their round-trip airfare to the region, their health insurance, any necessary visa application fees, and transportation expenses for attending the on-campus interviews in February and the orientation in late May. Eligibility: PiLA fellows come from nearly all fields of study, including international relations, public policy, economics, law, engineering, the sciences, pre-medicine, journalism, social sciences, foreign languages and literatures, the arts, and the humanities. Fellows include first- and second-generation immigrants, as well as those native to the region who wish to return to engage in a year of meaningful social service in the NGO and multilateral sector. Application for PiLA fellowships in Latin America and the Caribbean is open to graduates and seniors of accredited U.S. and Canadian universities. We welcome non-U.S. citizens to apply, with the caveat that a small number of placements will be unavailable to them.
